Meet Genessee Mauras, Licensed Vocational Nurse

At California Care Recovery, we believe that the foundation of healing is built on a deep sense of safety, compassion, and human connection. Embodying this spirit is Genessee Mauras, a Licensed Vocational Nurse whose dedication to patient care is rooted in profound personal experience. Her role is central to our mission: providing a nurturing, clinically sound environment for individuals beginning their recovery from substance use disorders and mental health challenges.

California Care Recovery has established itself as a leading residential detox and treatment center in Orange County. Genessee’s work is vital in creating the safe, supportive space where this healing can begin, meeting clients in their most vulnerable moments and guiding them through the critical first steps of their journey.

A Calling Born from Compassion

Genessee has always had a desire to help and care for people, but her path to nursing was shaped by two pivotal life experiences. The first was becoming a caregiver for her grandmother at the end of her life. “Spending that time with her and being able to connect with her in a different way really changed the way I saw how I wanted to live my life,” Genessee shares.

Years later, the motivation to finally start nursing school came after the birth of her son. During her studies, she quickly realized she had a calling to work in psych and behavioral health. This calling was also informed by her past; having a loved one in active addiction at home during her teenage years gave her a firsthand understanding of how substance use can negatively impact a person’s life. This combination of experiences solidified her passion for helping people in recovery.

A Foundation of Care: More Than Just a Nurse

At California Care, Genessee is with our clients every step of the way, from the moment they walk through the door feeling sick and overwhelmed, through the entire detox process, until they leave healthier in both mind and body. While her technical role is a nurse, her impact is that of a true caregiver.

One of the most unique ways she provides this care is through her love of cooking. “I think one of the most unique things I provide is not just my style of nursing but also the fact that I love to feed people,” she says. “I cook and bake for everyone pretty much every day that I work and everyone always tells me how much they love it. I believe a home cooked meal made with love is healing for not just the body but for the soul too.” This simple act of nourishment creates a sense of home and comfort that is essential in early recovery.

A Philosophy of Seeing the Whole Person

Genessee’s approach to care is grounded in compassion, empathy, and the belief that every patient requires unique attention. “My highest priority is always their health and safety and providing that in a way that works best for them,” she explains. “I approach everyone with compassion and empathy and I take the time to see them as a person, and not just an addict.

While not an addict herself, Genessee connects with patients on a deeply human level by sharing her own life experiences. “I have struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life so I am able to relate to our patients in that way,” she says. “I like sharing my experience with that to help people feel not so alone in their struggles.” This vulnerability and honesty helps break down walls and build the healing relationships that are so important for recovery.

Life Outside the Office

Genessee’s role as a caregiver extends to her life at home, where she spends most of her free time with her son. “We love going to parks and throwing the football and kicking the soccer ball around. We also love going to Chuck E Cheese. Any time spent with him is my favorite.” When she doesn’t have her son with her, she enjoys hiking, being out in nature, and going to the movies.

Words of Wisdom: “Progress, Not Perfection”

For anyone struggling and considering taking the first step, Genessee offers words of profound and practical wisdom. “The biggest thing I can tell people is just to not give up,” she advises. “It’s going to get harder before it gets easier but we’re all here to help them get through the worst of it.

She often shares two of her favorite reminders with clients:

  • “Progress, not perfection.” This mantra is a cornerstone of recovery, acknowledging that we are all human and will make mistakes, but the key is to keep moving forward.
  • “Do your best for that day.” She explains, “When someone says ‘do your best’, that doesn’t mean 100% all the time, but to do the best you can for that day. So if that means the best you can do today is just get out of bed and shower, then you’ve done your best.
